Add a CommentIf it weren't for the subsequent fame of Kurosawa, this would not be put onto DVD at all. There are many clichéd moments, and silly micro-melodramatics, all shown in as many shots (cutbacks and reaction shots mostly) as possible. After half an hour I was regretting choosing to watch it to the end.
Written and directed by Akira Kurosawa in 1946 based on the 1933 Takigawa incident (滝川事件) and the Sorge Spy Ring (ゾルゲ事件), this Japanese docudrama depicts the struggle of a young woman during the war-time Japan.
The film stars Setsuko Hara, Susumu Fujita, Takashi Shimura and Denjirō Ōkōchi.
Fujita's character was inspired by the real-life Hotsumi Ozaki, who assisted the famous Soviet spy Richard Sorge and so became the only Japanese citizen to suffer the death penalty for treason during World War II.
