Terribly emotive even for the genre and that final deus ex machina has got to be one of silent cinema’s most contrived “tragedies” but the B&W alpine scenery is lovely (filmed in Banff, Alberta!) and Lubitsch puts those howling snowstorms and jagged crags to imaginative use. It’s a wonder everyone didn’t come down with frostbite.
