Great acting, well done.

Satisfactory film on a young girl's life in the southern U.S. and her efforts to keep her family together against many struggles and challenges.

Interesting film, well shot and generally well acted though I found some of the dialog
mumbled and unintelligible the first time I heard it. Might have rated higher but for
an inexplicable plot defect towards the end of the movie which exists because, I think,
the creators fell in love with the dramatic scene that it sets up.

A lone 17-year old heroine braves crackheads, meth labs, and the hillbilly mafia in order to find her long lost father in what amounts to a slow-burning Greek tragedy set in the white trash outback of Missouri. Jennifer Lawrence maintains an intense monotone while everyone else weaves a web of southern menace that makes "Deliverance" look like prom night in Savannah. Dismal and depressing yet hugely watchable.

More like "Winter's Bore," amiright? 2011's surprise best picture nominee is also one of the slowest movies I've seen in a while. Set in the grim Ozarks, it's supposed to be a mystery, but the only mystery is why did so many critics love it. I get it, they're poor and life is bleak, but don't take it out on me. At least it did provide an unintentionally hilarious, dirty title to make easy jokes about. I guess it's based on a book.

Revisiting Debra Granik's masterpiece five years after release shows it retains its amazing power. At a tender 19 years of age, then newcomer Jennifer Lawrence as 17-year-old Ree Dolly captures the total essence of Daniel Woodrell's young heroine. Granik and Anne Rosselini are not able to transfer to the screen all of the powerful scenes of the original story in their screenplay, but the ones they were able to translate are even more powerful in cinematic form. The property won two Sundance prizes and four Academy Award nominations for good reason. Powerful performances were given by John Hawkes (no surprise) as uncle Teardrop, the character one hates at first and loves by the end. Also notable are veteran actress Dale Dickey as Merag, the matriarch of the clan and Loren Sweetser as Dee's chuildhood friend Gail. Other actors, many recruited from the Missouri Ozark area , some probably from the Springfield drama community are of equal quality. It's grim, dark, depressing, distressing and ultimately tremendously uplifting. Wikipedia points out that many of the denizens of the allegedly inbred area are sprung from the Irish Travelers or Walking People. Indeed the surname Dolly is said to be a derivative of the Irish name O Dathlaoich, carried by some members of the Traveler community. And the Travelers, sometimes called Tinkers are also said to be drawn to pastimes such as the cooking of meth that figures so prominently in the story. One other brilliant Granik touch is the use almost monochrome transition shots into gray skies through bare trees and the use of small animal and bird activity to heighten the mood. One in particular is accompanied by the whine of a chainsaw blending into a quiet violin passage. The entire production, done on a dime, is truly astoundingly beautiful.

Good movie, shows how truely crazy some people are when they think they are protecting their way of like, no matter how backwards that may be. The scary part is that what the movie depicts is probably exactly what goes on in some of the backwater places in the USA.
