I’ve been hoping the Library would help me find a serviceable ‘Suites,’ and this should do nicely. The Pablo Casals recordings can’t be considered satisfactory due to their origin as 78’s, though brilliant and historically important. The YoYo Ma recording I have sounds aimed at the greater glory of Yo Yo Ma, in which respect is annoying. This one misses being just right, if the composer intended something more pensive and less exuberant. But it’s still an enjoyable, really well articulated vision.
I am taking the time to rate this because I noticed its (previous) low rating. In fact this is a fabulous interpretation, played beautifully on period instruments, and gorgeously recorded. (There is a reason it won the Gramophone best baroque instrumental recording of 2015.)http://www.gramophone.co.uk/awards/2015/baroque-instrumental
