National bestselling author Charles Stross brings back Bob Howard-"a British super spy with a long-term girlfriend, no fashion sense, and an aversion to martinis" ( San Francisco Chronicle )

Bob Howard is taking a much needed break from the field to catch up on his filing in The Laundry's archives when a top secret dossier known as The Fuller Memorandum vanishes-along with his boss, who the agency's executives believe stole the file.

Determined to discover exactly what the memorandum contained, Bob runs afoul of Russian agents, ancient demons, and the apostles of a hideous faith, who have plans to raise a very unpleasant undead entity known as the Eater of Souls...

I very much enjoy Stross' tales of spy/computer technician/sorceror Bob Howard, and this is one of the stronger stories from the collection so far. The book's own tale is quite entertaining, but we also are treated to the intriguing backstory of one of the series' more interesting characters. However, despite the frequently humorous tone of these stories, Stross is not reluctant to have some truly awful things happen to his characters. These passages can be hard to read, but in my opinion, it would be cheating to write a horror story which *didn't* deliver on the threat of horrible things, and Stross does provide more menace than mayhem.

One of my fav current authors. His take on the "jesusphone" is priceless.

Unfortunately, the truth doesn't end there. The things we sometimes refer to the elder gods are alien intelligences, which evolved on their own terms, unimaginably far away and long ago, in zones of spacetime which aren't normally connected to our own, where the rules are different. But that doesn't mean they can't reach out and touch us. As man puts it: Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Any sufficiently advanced alien intelligence is indistinguishable from God - the angry monotheistic sadist type. And the elder ones... aren't friendly.
(See I told you I'd rather be an atheist!)
