I think this is an important story to tell. However, I never liked or even warmed up to the narrator/protagonist in the story, which for me detracted from my enjoyment of the book.

I recently learned on NPR about the Depression-era librarians on horseback in Appalachia. I was so proud of those gutsy women! This children's book brings out part of the story, told through the eyes of a small boy whose home in Kentucky is visited by the librarians. I wish the book had been longer, or that there existed a book for adults on the subject. It's a story that is crying out to be written!

I fell in love with this book! It really touched me. I read this book to my son and I read it to him in a country voice based on the dialogue of the book.

I really liked this story. I had no idea there were pack horse librarians in the 1930's. Interesting story!
