"April and Oliver are cousins, used to be best friends, and might be soul mates. But April, a damaged barkeep who dallies with dangerous men, and Oliver, a musical prodigy who's made sensible decisions all his life, are estranged, and are only brought together again when April's brother is killed in a car accident. The renewed friendship between the apparent opposites is tentative, fraught with desire and fear on both sides, and complicated by others in their lives - a fiancée for Oliver, and the violent T.J. for April. There are no easy answers in a story like this, but the author's "poetic style and grasp of emotion" (Publishers Weekly) makes the tale of April and Oliver compelling." I liked this book. It wasn't a page turner for me though but I still liked it. It was a depressing book though. It was ok.

Not memorable, too dry and sad. At least other books of the like make you CARE about their characters! April was just too broken to find anything salvagable, I became disinterested after the first 15 pages

Coming from a debut writer, this novel is extraordinarily impressive. Callahan has created a world where the path not taken is always at the forefront of everyone’s mind. April and Oliver are step-cousins whose lives have been intertwined since birth. There has always been a bond between them too difficult to explain to others- and to themselves. Leading separate lives since Oliver went away to College, they are thrown back together for the agony of Buddy’s funeral, April’s younger brother who dies tragically in a car accident at the age of 18. The novel begins here and continues with April and Oliver struggling to reconcile the mistakes of the past and prevent wrong decisions that may lead them to a questionable future.
Gripping, with edgy prose, the awkwardness between two people that have a lifetime of things left unsaid between them is showcased in this sometimes dark/sometimes light tale of fate.
Four and a half stars (out of five)

...a little bit gritty, but an interesting story that makes you believe in happy endings.
