As a lately only disappointed devotee of procedural series I'd begun to be afraid I'd already read all the good ones, so I was thrilled to discover this author. If one of the genres you like to read is British historical procedural mysteries that also give attention to the emotional and family life of the main characters, I'm sure you'll like this novel. Other reviews hint that not all in the series are of the same quality. If I find that to be the case, I'll update this review.

Story maintains suspense throughout and shows how the police move carefully and methodically to find a psychopathic killer. The story succeeds (to me) in convincingly depicting wartime London with a minimum of detail. John Madden does not figure so prominently in this story but his work does the major unraveling of the mystery... great story.

Once again John Madden is involved in a murder case although he has been retired and living in the country for 20 years. This time the victim was someone who was living under his roof and he feels personally responsible in solving the case. While seeking the truth in wartime London, he finds the usual red herrings and people from his past that will eventually crack this case. Rennie Airth has created an intriguing story that brings back old characters and lets the reader catch up on the Madden family as well. Well worth reading!
