As a former investment banker at Goldman Sachs, Mr. Talbott is well suited to write on the subject of the globalization of business (corporatization) and its pathological effects on humanity. In this book he covers all the same bases as other books on this subject, i.e. lack of transparency, thievery, anti-social investment practices, greed, and in particular just how extended we have become in debt of all kind. While this book focuses on the American experience to illustrate his theories this undoubtedly applies to all the industrialized and developing countries of the world. One of the most disturbing issues explored is the extent to which the ideal of democracy has been replaced by the reality of government by auction. Sad really. In the final chapter he outlines a path of where we should be headed. Its hard to imagine we could ever find our way there as the forces aligned against the bulk of humanity deem the welfare of the majority as simply another externality to be ignored. Certainly a book worth reading but be warned Mr. Talbott could use the services of a better proof reader.

the first 90% is good, lots of insight into current US financial problems, but last 10% is a bit preachy about return of moral values
