Although its a fairly long movie at two and a quarter hours, it never flags or get bogged down; the plot is so complicated that the real pleasure if the film comes with trying to figure out what is going on even while the characters are changing and new information is coming out undermining one's thoughts of what is going down and having to readjust. The film has many similarities to 'Chinatown', but its more cartoonish with many cheesy one-liners and witticisms. Its also very violent and keeps getting darker as the plot progresses.

The smutty, seamy side of Hollywood in the 1950s is explored in this intriguing, multi-layered film based on James Ellory's famous novel of the same name.

L. A. Confidential's hard-as-nails story centers around the activities of the Los Angeles Police Force and a ruthless, muck-racking magazine publisher named Sid Hudgens. Jack Vincennes is a high-profile cop who greatly benefits from Hudgens' busts of movie stars and political figures.

Russell Crowe as Bud White steals the show as the rugged, straight-arrow detective who finds himself caught up in the city's slimy underbelly because, in part, of his torrid love affair with a beautiful, high-priced hooker named Lynn Bracken.

Check out L. A. Confidential. It's Hollywood movie-making that's guaranteed to keep you entertained.

Great acting, action, mystery and investigative solving by the 1950's LAPD, part corrupt and part heroic. A good intriguing murder mystery and a little comedy about the multiple investigations of murders, corruption and prostitutes in Los Angeles during turbulent after WW 2 years. And all the surrounding police graft that went along with it. One of my favorites!

Russell Crowe is outstanding as the "means well but threatening" LAPD detective, Spacey as the easy-going cop caught up in glamour but trying to do good, DeVito as the "always working an angle and inflaming things" who "gets owned", Pierce as the straight arrow detective and Bassinger as the beautiful, sexy "heart of gold call-girl" surrounded by drugs, sex and glitzy glamour.

A really good movie

Cop pulp at its finest. For a bit of LPL trivia, a now retired copy of LA Confidential holds the record for most circulated item with 530 checkouts.

Directed, produced and co-written by Curtis Hanson in 1997 based on James Ellroy's 1990 novel of the same name, this American crime drama depicts the intersection of police corruption and Hollywood celebrity in the 1950s.
With twists and turns in a hard-boiled style, this film turns out an engaging and thrilling entertaining piece with excellent performances of a terrific cast.
I enjoyed it to the hilt.

a film noir, but in Cinemascope and colour, testosterone flies all over the place in all kinds of amoral directions, including over the top, but with superb acting throughout, great cinematography, and artful direction

Kevin Spacey channeling Dean Martin.

Long movie, but held my attention the whole time.

Spicy and boiling-hot, this sensational early-'50s crime drama is a morality play disguised as pulp fiction -- a sprawling saga of corruption and redemption set against a flashy West Coast backdrop.

L.A. Confidential is a movie bull's-eye: noir with an attitude, a thriller packing punches. It gives up its evil secrets with a smile.
