Moving between the 1930s and the present, Maggie O'Farrell's new novel is a portrait of a woman edited out of her family's history. The heartbreaking tale of two sisters in colonial India and Edinburgh bound together by loneliness and driven apart by rivalries that lead to a cruel betrayal, it is also the story of how, 60 years later, their shocking secret comes to light.

This book sat on my "to-read" shelf for more than three years. Every time I noticed it, I passed over it in favor of something else. It wasn't until I purposely decided to read a languishing book that I finally picked it up. That was a mistake.

The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox is intricate, and the writer's storytelling style forces the reader to engage in understanding how Esme's life turned out as it did, rather than simply watching the story unfold. I sometimes had to go back and re-read Kitty's fragmented thoughts to understand the meaning behind them, but that was half the fun.

The mystery is haunting - how does someone, who admittedly thinks a little differently than the typical young woman of her era but comes from a presumably loving family - end up invisible and forgotten for 60 years in a mental hospital? What horrible, selfish motivations put (and kept) her there - and could it still happen today? I'm so glad I finally read this book.
