A better than average production, with a more modern and explicit translation. For once, it is understandable that Mrs. Alving was attracted by Pastor Manders, although Michael Gambon looks far too intelligent to be taken in by that old carpenter. Kenneth Branagh gives his usual somewhat hammy performance, but the main problem is Ibsen's script, which could use another draft. Characters are continually firing telling questions at one another, like interviewers from Dateline.
