One of the most astute and engaging political analysts, Parenti shows that culture is a changing process, an arena of conflict as well as consensus, the product of a dynamic interplay between a wide range of social and political interests. In a word, to understand a society, we need to understand the problem of culture as well as that of power. Parenti uses vivid examples and riveting arguments that range from the everyday to the esoteric to construct a work which is richly informed and written with style, with dashes of irony and humour.

A clearly written polemic against the background assumptions in American late modern capitalism. Some of the chapters, like the one about rape, are really shocking. The most enlightening chapters are the early ones. Each of the subsequent chapters can be considered as summaries of books themselves.
