So good and weird—beautiful cinematography and framing of scenes. Loved the deranged junky prostitute, evil masochistic knife-throwing boss man who makes out with his cat, and cutest little japanese 60s cars.

You’ll need to go elsewhere to read about the fabled careers of director Seijun Suzuki and actor Jo Shishido. There are plenty of experts on the pair and I am not one of them. As a matter of fact, I’m just a neophyte fan of yakuza flicks and am about as willing to admit it to the world as I am to own up to being a dyed-in-the-wool Trekkie… well, okay, perhaps I’d sooner own up to a guilty pleasure for yakuza flicks.

Anyway, this picture is, of course, a wild ride. The full color treatment (and Criterion’s reconstruction of it) give’s Jo Shishido’s patented cheeks a much better presentation than black & white… One could almost believe them to be real…. Okay, perhaps not, but that's not important right now!

And the soundtrack!! Wheeoou!! There’s this hothothot jazz combo playing loudloudloud (in stunning monaural!) inter-cut savagely with spectacular periods of silencesilencesilence. I’m not talking creeping-around-in-a-haunted-house/BOO! stuff here -- this is real ART!

Furthermore, this picture contains some of the most insane background action I’ve ever seen! I watched many parts of the film several times just to drink it all in! But WAIT there's more… I don’t think I’m giving anything away when I say that there is one scene in which the hero wins a shoot out AND beats up a villain while he (the hero) is hanging upside down from the chandelier! Not even James Bond has come close to that one!
