I saw this movie in bits and pieces when it first came out on DVD/HBO. I thought it was really interesting because it brought to the screen something that I've always thought about which is how a person, choice, or event can alter one's life. So years later, I've come back to view it in full. I'm glad I did. It was good. I watched both the Director's cut and the theatrical edition. The ending of the director's cut was powerful, poetic, and sad. Of course Hollywood loves a happy ending, and I so do I, so I can see why they went with the ending in the theatrical edition. I would definitely recommend this film.

The theory presented in this movie is that certain actions taken in the present will profoundly affect the future. Evan suffered from blackouts as a child and now 13 years later begins to explore the reason for those blackouts. Throughout his life Evan kept journals of his life experiences. While re-reading the journals Evan discovers that he can return (time travel) back to events in the past. However whenever Evan changes the past he also significantly changes the future. Inevitably those changes make the future worse for Evan and his friends.

In the movies, when it comes to the likes of time travel, it always seems that heading forward into the future is about 10 times more successful than it is going back into the past._____ This, of course, makes some sense since the future isn't set yet. (Unless you believe in fate) So, it can, sort of, be tampered with or altered to some degree._____ But, on the otherhand, mucking around with the past and events that have already taken place is a lot like skating on extremely thin ice._____ For the most part I found The Butterfly Effect to be way too disjointed in its format to be seriously considered really good entertainment. (What an editing nightmare this film must have been)_____ But, I do give the director lots of credit for a darn good effort at trying to convince me that travelling into the past was, indeed, plausible._____ But since the main character came from such a dysfunctional background to begin with there was absolutely no way that he was ever going to remedy things no matter how many attempts he made at tinkering with the wrongs that took place in the past, desperately trying to make them right.

I have to say that i found myself saying "What the f@#k" often while watching this very good movie. I of course watched it with my friend who often talks to the television. She loves to talk back to the screen as if the actors can hear her and will carry out her advice. Watching this movie she yelled quite often, getting upset at the "evil kid" who was sooooo bad. I have this version which i love in dts 6.1 plus some very cool extras to watch on your HOMETHEATER!! This is a good movie to watch that will have you scratching your head if you don't get it. What we really enjoyed about this movie is the story and the characters, and how often there lives changed. I also liked the sound that was produced when the main character jumps from one time to another trying try change things that only become worse. But this movie is about story and it's done quite well. I like this movie very much and have it in my collection. I'm giving this mind bending, time jumping nightmare, 5 stars!!!!! Very good story, an unforgettable "evil" childhood character, and my friend becoming insane while watching this movie. Ha, ha, ha , ha, ha. Two large Pastrami sandwiches, pickles, french fries, whole wheat bread, coke, and potato chips.

good drama-sci-fi w/some action albeit repetative and yet necessary to solve the mystery or fit the plot.

it reminded me of how one might set to dreaming about how he/she'd replay an awkward situation to satisfaction's end.

An interesting and enjoyable film, if you can suspend your disbelief.
