Cultural Transcendence: Gu Xiong's Forty Years of Migration and Artistic Practice

2:30 PM – 4:00 PM
Central Library

Description

Multimedia artist Gu Xiong, Professor in the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory at the University of British Columbia, draws on his forty years of migration experience to explore how individuals continually reshape their identities amid the tension of multiple cultures, while elevating their artistic practice. Meanwhile, he intertwines his person experiences into the historical context of early Chinese migration, revealing vitality and the emergence of hybrid identities in overlooked areas. His works center on personal memory, connecting individual experience, local context, and global flows.

Denise Fong (PhD), Curator of Urban Cultures from Museum of Vancouver moderates the event and engages in conversation with Prof. Gu.
