This is the first feature documentary concerning Mao's purge of writers and focuses on the 1955 Anti-Hu Feng Campaign, which set a precedent for larger scale of better known persecution of intellectuals in 1957 (Anti-Rightist Campaign). The film's intriguing plot spans the period from 1929 to 2009 and offers an in-depth look at the tumultuous changes in recent Chinese history. Through interviews with survivors, it revisits a political storm that implicated more than two thousand people, offering a profound reflection on the tension between revolution and independent thought. Directed by Peng Xiaolian, S. Louisa Wei, English and Chinese, 2009.
The Chinese-language version will be screened in the Montalbano Family Theatre, while the English-language version will be shown in Room 920. A 30-minute post-screening Q&A with the director on Zoom will take place in the Montalbano Family Theatre.
In partnership with Blue Queen Cultural Communication.
