Expanded Cinema: i+eo's Portals

7:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Central Library

Description

Expanded Cinema is a new series of performances that combine cinema with live music, movement, theatre, and more.

Portals is an audiovisual performance by i+eo, a collaboration between sound artist IHA and video artist ephemeral objects. Merging AI visuals, modular soundscapes, and vivid colours inspired by Southeast Asian street life, they create an audiovisual experience charged with deep bass and shifting textures—a hypnotic journey where memory, identity, and imagination collapse into one.

Following the performance, the artists will engage in a talkback with the audience.

ephemeral objects is the alias of Michelle La, a Vancouver-based interdisciplinary artist, VJ, DJ, and producer whose work captures the fleeting beauty of light and sound. Combining generative visuals with real-world footage, she crafts abstract, audio-reactive landscapes that evoke deep emotional resonance. A resident of Acceleration Radio, Michelle La curates experimental programming that spotlights emerging and diverse talents from Vancouver’s underground scene. Drawing on her Chinese-Vietnamese heritage and academic background in sociology and anthropology, she approaches her work as an exploration of memory, community, and perception.

IHA is the moniker of Apple Cabrera, a Vancouver-based DJ, producer, and founder of the forward-thinking label NAGA. Through a playful yet instinctive approach to curation, Cabrera crafts genre-fluid sets that move between atmospheric dub, textured techno, and futuristic bass, transforming dance floors as well as ambient settings into spaces of vivid sonic exploration. Their musical language is rooted in cultural memory, dreams, and shifts in perception, weaving together storytelling and experimentation with an ear for rich, layered sounds. Constantly evolving, they continue to carve out a singular, deeply resonant sonic path.
