When music becomes ideology, who decides what can be heard?
In Taiwan, generations of musicians have lived under both visible censorship and invisible market pressures tied to China. Hosted by cultural historian Chen-Yu Lin (Honorary Fellow, Institute of Popular Music, University of Liverpool), this session explores the enduring impact of the "China factor" on Taiwan's music -- past and present.
Through a screening and discussion, Lin invites us to think: What does cultural sovereignty sound like -- and who gets to decide?
The documentary is in Mandarin with English subtitles. Q&A will be conducted in Mandarin.
In partnership with Vancouver TAIWANfest.
