Jiyu is the pen name of Shou-Fang Hu-Moore. She came to Canada in 1976 to study at the University of Alberta. Less than a year after arriving, her life took a dramatic turn when she was diagnosed of leukemia, and a young man whom she had been dating for only a few months immediately proposed to her. Thus began the couple's long journey together dealing with this terminal disease, while continuing their studies and careers. Despite all the physical and mental hardships, he eventually became a medical doctor and she established multiple career paths in interior design, architecture, writing, translation and Mandarin Chinese education.

吉羽，本名胡守芳。1976年來到加拿大學習，然而未滿一年就被診斷出白血病。一位與她交往幾個月的加國男友聞訊後即刻向她求婚，就此展開了一段長達一生的異國姻緣。她在丈夫的陪伴下接受了包括骨髓移植的治癌療程。於此同時，兩人始終沒有放棄學習和工作。她的丈夫後來成為一名醫生，她也發掘了未知的潛能，從事包括室內設計、建築、寫作、翻譯和漢語教學等多樣富含創意的工作。

吉羽新近出版的回憶錄《情渡死生——对抗血癌四十餘年,置之死地而復生的生命奇蹟》, 不僅回顧了艱辛的治癌歷程，也見證了他們夫妻在死亡的陰影下所展現的深情和勇氣。吉羽將半世磨難娓娓道來，終於領悟到不斷逼迫自己朝生路走並活出自己的居然是死亡。
