Vancouver’s own hard-boiled PI returns for the fifth installment in Sam Wiebe’s best-selling Wakeland Series. This time around, Dave Wakeland must prove the innocence of a single mother accused of murdering a retired biker gang leader. 

Sam will be in conversation with comedian and writer Charlie Demers for a fun and illuminating chat about thrills, mystery, and how writing Vancouver has, and continues, to change through the years.

Sam Wiebe is the author of the bestselling Ocean Drive (2024), as well as the Wakeland novels, one of the most authentic and acclaimed detective series in Canada, including Sunset and Jericho (2023) and Hell and Gone (2021). His work has won the Crime Writers of Canada award, the Kobo Emerging Writers prize, and a silver medal from the Independent Publisher Book Awards, and been shortlisted for the Edgar, Hammett, Shamus and City of Vancouver book prizes. He lives in New Westminster, BC.

Charlie Demers is a Juno-nominated stand-up comedian, BC Book Prize-nominated author, & co-star of two Emmy-winning Netflix animated series, Beat Bugs and The Last Kids on Earth. He can typically manage only one paragraph in the third person. He is also known for his 2009 collection of essays Vancouver Special; his most recent novels are Noonday Dark and Primary Obsessions.
