The Staircase Sounds concert series continues with the grand, complex, and bombastic sound of Indonesian gamelan as interpreted by one of the most exciting ensembles working in Vancouver: Gamelan Bike Bike.
Drawing their musical inspiration from Bali, Indonesia and creating their own instruments with raw materials from Vancouver scrapyards, Gamelan Bike Bike is re-imagining the ancient art of gamelan performance. Over 100 discarded bicycle frames, along with other scrap metals, have been transformed into a range of tuned metallophones and gongs that form the foundation of their sound.
Join us on the Grand Staircase at the Central Library to experience this melding of Indonesian tradition with contemporary composition.
