Varta: The Price of Ukrainian Resistance

10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Central Library

Description

In Ukrainian, the word “варта” (pronounced “varta”) signifies the innate and unwavering need to protect property, places, and people from danger. How are Ukrainian graphic artists using their work to communicate this unthinkable experience of living through war?

Join us for a community event that explores the impact that the current war is having on Ukrainians across the world.

The event will feature an exhibition of posters and illustrations by more than 30 Ukrainian artists, curated by Ukrainian graphic designer Iryna Kalantai. We will also have musical performances, a conversation with displaced Ukrainian artists, and a panel discussion on the role of graphic design as a tool for hope and change.

Agenda:

  • 10 am – Doors open: exhibition on view until 6pm.
  • 12 pm – Performances by Ukrainian musicians and a live recording of the forthcoming “Diaspora / Діаспора” podcast featuring displaced artists in conversation with Ukrainian Canadian journalist Sabrina Rani Furminger, host of the YVR Screen Scene podcast.
  • 3 pm – Panel Discussion – Protest Posters: Graphic Design as a Tool for Change. CANCELLED
  • 6 pm – Doors close

This event is presented in partnership with the Ukrainian Canadian Advocacy Group, with funding from the Shevchenko Foundation Ukrainian Canadian Veterans Fund, and support from the Design Professionals of Canada and Pictoriс.
