Jennifer Egan: The Candy House

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

Description

We have entered an era where our attachment to technology, our relationship to our smartphones, and the things we share on social media, define our lives. What would happen to our identities if our memories were no longer private?

Jennifer Egan explores this and the multiverse of related questions in her new, highly anticipated novel, THE CANDY HOUSE. A sibling work to her Pulitzer Prize-winning A Visit From the Goon Squad, this novel applies Egan’s bold and creative stylistic experimentation to the most pressing questions of the social media age and shows us the truth of our time the only way it can truly be seen: through a fractured funhouse mirror of characters, voices, and tweets.

Jennifer Egan will discuss her book with Cory Doctorow, award-winning author, activist, and expert on (dismantling) surveillance capitalism.

Jennifer Egan is the author of six previous books of fiction: Manhattan Beach, winner of the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction; A Visit from the Goon Squad, which won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award; The Keep; the story collection Emerald City, a National Book Award Finalist; and The Invisible Circus.

Cory Doctorow is a science fiction author, activist and journalist. He is the author of many books, most recently Attack Surface and Radicalized, science fiction for adults; How to Destroy Surveillance Capitalism, nonfiction about monopoly and conspiracy; In Real Life, a graphic novel; and the picture book Poesy the Monster Slayer. In 2020, he was inducted into the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.
