Writing the City: Crafting Poems about Place

2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

Description

All of us have been shaped by significant places in our lives in both subtle and powerful ways. Perhaps it's a park, a home, a school, a theatre, a neighbourhood, or someplace else.

This online workshop led by Vancouver's Poet Laureate, Fiona Tinwei Lam, will discuss poetic tools and examples of place-based poems, as well as offer writing prompts to help you uncover and discover the potential for meaningful poems. During the session, there be one or two timed writing periods, followed by sharing in breakout groups. The workshop will conclude with tips on how to revise and polish what you've written.

Please find an object or photograph or two related to the place you'd like to write about in advance of the workshop, as it will provide a starting point for the writing you will do during the online session.

Vancouver's 6th Poet Laureate, Fiona Tinwei Lam has published three collections of poetry and a children’s book. Her poems have been featured in Best Canadian Poetry, in the League of Canadian Poets’ Poem in Your Pocket program, and thrice with BC’s Poetry in Transit, as well as in award-winning poetry videos made in collaboration with filmmakers that have screened worldwide. She edited The Bright Well: Contemporary Canadian Poems about Facing Cancer, and co-edited two nonfiction anthologies. Shortlisted for the City of Vancouver Book Prize and other awards, her work has been included in over 40 anthologies.
