I loved this (fictionalized) account of PT Barnum's life and his creation of the Barnum Circus. The songs are completely addictive, especially "Greatest Show" and "Rewrite the Stars," and Keala Settle's rendition of "This is Me" will bring tears to your eyes. Just a really heartwarming story, with so many great actors and actresses and a message of acceptance that resonates. The first in a romance series that has it all: feminism, diversity, heart, and some really steamy love scenes! The two main characters are former high school sweethearts who broke up after a tragedy drove their respective families into a feud. Livvy's a free-spirited tattoo artist who struggles with depression, Nicholas is an uptight businessman who chafes against his father's wishes. When Livvy comes back to town after a long absence, sparks begin to fly, and you can guess where that leads. --Rachel (for more of Rachel's suggestions, follow WoodneathRachel)The first in a romance series that has it all: feminism, diversity, heart, and some really steamy love scenes! I have so many feelings about Empire of Sand, I'm not even sure where to start gushing.
Okay, first--the setting. Tasha Suri's Mughal-inspired fantasy world is not only stunningly beautiful, but it's also complex in a way that all too many fantasy settings aren't. The cultures that Suri created feel *real* and they add fascinating dimensions to her already-excellent characters. Speaking of which...
Mehr was an unusual but amazing protagonist. She's not your typical "strong female character" in that she's no warrior, but her strength of will and unshakeable moral core makes her easy to love. And then there's the love interest--totally dreamy, but the absolute opposite of the pervasive alpha male stereotype.
Lastly, Empire of Sand is a book about choice. We may not have control over every aspect of our lives, but it's our choices in tough situations that show us who we really are. I think that's an amazing theme and made even the darkest parts of this book shine with a peculiar light.
Long story short: if you love epic fantasy, Empire of Sand is one of the best. Check it out today! --Lizzie (for more of Lizzie's suggestions, follow WoodneathLizzie)I have so many feelings about Empire of Sand, I'm not even sure where to start gushing.
