Noir Fiction: Classic and Contemporary Works

Annotation:A hardboiled pulp story of murderous mugs that get on the wrong side of a surgeon who’s also a trained assassin. Don’t be surprised if you see this book performing community service dressed in dayglo orange.

Annotation:A pitch-perfect, pitch-black undoing of English ex-boxer and small-time P.I. Cal Innes. Following a drug-related stroke, Cal seems destined for continued trouncing by crooked cops and low-rent gangsters. The violence only lets-up while he recovers between beatings. The conclusion to a memorable four part series.

Annotation:Chumps don’t have much worse luck than Jack. At an airport bar on his way to his divorce proceedings, he starts flirting with ‘the blonde’. Next thing he knows, he’s been poisoned and trapped in a Kafkaesque nightmare. Breakneck pacing.

Annotation:Johnny Weather returns a toughened and jaded survivor of World War II to discover his small hometown seething in big-time corruption. This early Macdonald is quality classic post-war hardboiled pulp.

Annotation:Nate and Sara are broke so finding a large amount of money seems like a stroke of good fortune until it takes them careening on a collision course where the dangers and hazards never let up. Astonishingly, all the action takes place in the confines of a snowbound motel.

Annotation:A smouldering tale of a husband losing control over a scorching femme fatale. In the end, all comes crashing down, sliding into a sinkhole of blood, sweat, and fears, in steamy, sleazy, Miami.

Annotation:A man’s wife and son taken hostage during a bank heist are summarily executed. Obsession and madness follow as the increasingly misanthropic husband and father seeks revenge. This terse, elegant and subtle Roman Noir will have you contemplating the choices you might make given similar circumstances.

Annotation:Royston (Blakey) Blake is amongst the best recurring characters in all noir, and the series an outstanding addition to the English noir genre. In this, the first of the Mangel series, we meet luckless bouncer ‘Blakey’ and the grotesque denizens of the tawdry town of Mangel.

Annotation:The plot skilfully weaves past and present in this impressive debut with an inspired noir set-up. Roy Cady’s a hard man with terminal cancer being pursued across a scorched dry Texas. Nothing relieves the spreading physical and urban decay. There’s little redemption for even the best.

Annotation:A potent, punchy start to a very influential series. Parker is a daring and cool-hearted thief. Not a man to attempt to kill… if you want to live.

Annotation:Is there honour among thieves? Plans go disastrously for Charlie, a crooked lawyer, when he tries to get out of blizzard-engulfed Wichita with his mob boss’s ill-gotten goods on Christmas Eve. Richly atmospheric.

Annotation:Leonard March is a prolific hit-man and stone-killer, just out of prison but railroaded to a dead end. This character study is masterfully written, blisteringly intense, and authentic noir.

Annotation:Amnesiac hood, Two Gun Danny Layton, makes his way through the shadowed and violent terrain of 1930’s Hollywood. Epperson masterfully manages a noir laced with some touchingly sad love. Ridley Scott is working with Casey Affleck in the film adaptation.

Annotation:The smoke, fog and poverty of 1950’s Glasgow make an ideal setting for this superb tartan-noir. Private Detective Lennox is Canadian but quite at home sorting out Glasgow’s three main mobsters, and getting into some serious scrapes in doing so.

Annotation:A medical doctor attempts to prove an innocent man has been executed and immediately descends into a midnight world of drugs, jagged sex and violence in this pithy, unremittingly bleak noir.

Annotation:Casting a long shadow, this is a hardboiled, dark and clever reworking of Sunset Boulevard. Bruen’s unmistakable style is something of an Irish mix of Jim Thompson and Cormac McCarthy.

Annotation:The author, Johnny Depp’s half brother, knows well that beneath the Hollywood tinsel, there’s more tinsel and sidewalks of sticky pitch upon which walk some very wretched miscreants doing rather unsavoury things to each other.

Annotation:In the character of Bernie Gunther, the irrepressible German gumshoe, ex- SS and Gestapo officer, Kerr has created an unforgettable protagonist, a product of the maelstrom of Nazi Germany. This is the first in an utterly brilliant series!

Annotation:If you like Jim Thompson’s novels, you’ll enjoy this classic noir. Drifter and criminal, Willa Ree, rolls into a Texas hamlet intent on pillaging it. A crooked town councillor makes Willa his puppet Chief of Police but quickly discovers just how disastrous an idea that was.

Annotation:This is a classic example of the French term ‘Roman Noir’: French hit-man, M. Terrier wishes to retire, at any cost, as those who get in his way find out. Things never go as planned in this relentless and tight escapade.

Annotation:Sailor, a cool Chicagoan hood, tracks down his sleazy politician boss, Sen, in a small Mexican desert town for a violent shakedown. Trailing both is Chicago cop, Mac. Contains a simple and stunning concluding sentence that might be said to capture all noir protagonists.

Annotation:After blackening his Glasgow police career by accidently killing a mother and child, Cameron Stone becomes a private detective and finds himself facing an even murkier future when his life is threatened. Taut and gripping.

Annotation:This is riveting Black Watch tartan-noir soaked in the gore of beatings and set in a very gloomy Edinburgh littered with hard, punched-up men, all hammered into a lunacy of droll characters and action.

Annotation:Jack Baylor, unemployed actor, quickly becomes a dissolute patsy when he becomes a prime suspect in a missing persons case. The California desert is deftly evoked and littered with some very feckless and treacherous characters.

Annotation:Jimmy Boone has served time as a Marine and prison inmate. Now he’s out to find who freed the dogs that mauled and killed a Guatemalan refugee. The investigation leads to very sordid dealings in the desert near LA. An impressive debut.
