The protagonist is Trudi Montag, a Zwerg -- the German word for dwarf woman. As a dwarf she is set apart, the outsider whose physical "otherness" has a corollary in her refusal to be a part of Burgdorf's silent complicity during and after World War II. Trudi establishes her status and power, not through beauty, marriage, or motherhood, but rather as the town's librarian and relentless collector of stories. Through Trudi's unblinking eyes, we witness the growing impact of Nazism on the ordinary townsfolk of Burgdorf as they are thrust on to a larger moral stage and forced to make choices that will forever mark their lives. Stones from the River is a story of secrets, parceled out masterfully by Trudi -- and by Ursula Hegi -- as they reveal the truth about living through unspeakable times.

Add a CommentA very interesting story. I wish the library had "Floating in My Mother's Palm".
I have just re-read this wonderful novel. ( It is about 10 years since I first read it. ) Amazing writing, but very accessible. Deeply moving.
Wonderful story with great characters. I couldn't put it down.
An outstanding book - totally absorbing from start to finish - certainly one of of my all time favourites and one I will read again. Unfortunately it is about 5 years since I have read it so unable to comment factually on story but fortunate in that I have a real treat in store as a re-read
Trudi, a dwarf, is the town's storyteller who lives part of her life through turbulant, Nazi-torn Germany during the Second World War. Hegi takes us through Trudi's life from early on, showing how cruel life can sometimes be. (Dec 2003)
