Garrow's Law, Series 1 introduces the audience to William Garrow an English barrister. The true events are reenacted as drama and trials based on records from London's Old Baily. During each of the four one hour episodes William Garrow provides a legal defense for clients charged with various crimes including theft, murder and treason.

If you enjoy reading works on late 18th/early 19th century England you'll enjoy this serie. Garrow is mightier with speech than Sharpe with his blade. (btw Major Sharpe as we all know was better skilled for the backstreets of London) ;)

Very Good Series. I would have hated to live at that time watching people get branded or hung for a petty crime.

A wonderful costume drama with fascinating story lines and great acting. An amazing glimpse at what law was like during the late 18th century.

William Garrow was very important to our current Common Law legal system, and aspects such as the adversarial system and rules of evidence. This mini-series is based on records from the Old Bailey courthouse, and uses the material to make an exciting and engaging drama that ranks with any detective, cop or legal series. Unfortunately, while Garrow's actual contributions are alluded to, they are not covered, and, unless you know legal history, you'll probably miss them. Also, "based on" does not necessarily mean "true": Sarah Dore was never married to Arthur Hill (although she had a child by him), and, in the sedition trial, Garrow was actually for the prosecution, not the defence. The authors have obviously been liberal in plucking facts from history and then weaving a story out of them. It's pretty much fiction, but it is a decent story.

A really good costume drama, well cast and interesting historical accuracy (origins of modern defense law). But I never really got into this series that much. Maybe because each episode is more stand alone story (like a version of Law and Order from the 1800s) that I didn't get into the main continuing story line. Still, if you like these types of BBC costume dramas or like law procedural shows you'll like it.

A wonderful portrayal of the 19th century British lawyer who coined the phrase and the legal concept that the defendent is "innocent until proven guilty".
