Kate by Valerie Sherrad is a moving tale that revolves around a young women living the best days of her life. Kate Benchworth is not the ordinary teenager. She is 14 and dying however, she still experiences the ups and downs any teenager has. After Kate found out she had cancer, she refused to give into self-pity and is determined to live her life to the fullest. This book was very captivating and was a definite page turner. It also opened my eyes about the time we have left in this world and how we should try to make the most of it because it isn’t forever. I loved how Kate focused more on the fact that she wanted to beautify her life with good deeds rather than concentrating on the fact she is dying. It was more about trying to help others and make another feel good because that is the greatest reward. Kate Benchworth views the world and the people on it in a new, honest light that is very refreshing. Even though Kate has cancer, I liked that she still did the same things any teenager would; she befriends the town recluse and falls in love with a boy in her small, quiet town. It was because of these simple, realistic problems that I could relate to Kate so well even though we are both two different people. I recommend this book; it was very moving and emotional. I’ve had others tell me the ending was annoying, but I found it perfect. Some say it ended abruptly, but that’s how life is it isn’t always slow turns, sometimes there are some sudden down hills or road bumps. The title of this novel was quite fitting it is simple yet somehow seems to summarize the story. It is called Kate because simply, that is what it is, a girl named Kate, living her life.
