Keira Knightley is a great actress and I always look forward to her movies, unfortunately that was not one of her best ones. Beautiful costumes though and I always love her accent.
I appreciate the work that went into creating this period piece. There is good cinematography, costume, make-up, setting, etc. However, I did not care too much for the story.
Rampant, blatant infidelity. A loveless marriage for the sake of the children. Lured by status and wealth at 17, Georgiana learns the hard lesson that "hindsight is 20/20". Coldly treated as a defective (baby-making) machine, and left with an impossible ultimatum, while the Duke "has his cake, and..." Keira Knightley has the looks, the brains, the chops. She truly is one remarkably talented young woman. Ralph Fiennes is no slouch, either. A polished actor. Sad piece, magnificent production value.
Loses marks for some over-the-top melodrama, but it's a good story by and large, and an excellent reminder of what life was like in the bad old days when women were completely in the power of their husbands and could be controlled through their children (which is of course still the case in parts of the world). Kiera Knightly actually does a solid job (good casting), and Ralph Fiennes is appropriately utterly stiff. Bonus of gorgeous period detail, costumes and sets.
I really liked this time piece. The costumes were wonderful, as was the story.
Historical fiction, except that it is a true story. Gorgeous costumes and good acting. Fantastic settings.
B+ dvd
Interesting story and it appeared most of it is true.
Enjoyable movie about a duchess. The period costumes are wonderful to see.
