Two people stand in his way. The first is a well-loved combat-weary lieutenant his own age who desperately wants out of the bush but who does not want to leave his Marines with an inexperienced and overly ambitious officer. The second is an angry leader of the company's radical blacks, who has all the political skill, savvy, and ambition of the protagonist. As the young lieutenant experiences the costs of combat, he sees the terrible results of his actions and begins to question the value of ambition and skill over compassion and heart.

Add a CommentGreat fictional Vietnam Story. One of the best written out there (fictional.) The narration is superb.
I chose this novel because my husband spent time in Vietnam. I wanted to try to understand. It was so compelling, I didn't want it to end. I felt so close to these characters. It is totally worth listening to or reading! Diana 01/03/12
when i walked away form the library having checked this audio format out, i didn't know if i could stomach 18 discs. i started listening and got hooked. it is long but the characters are well developed and the storyline is, according to many who've been in the military, as real as what is actually encountered out in the jungles or the deserts or the place we send troops. there's something to be said for listening to this being read instead of moving your eyes over the pages. i was haunted by several scenes and when i finally put in the last disc, i was glad i had stuck with it, through misery, death, commraderie and hours of patient, careful listening.
Bronson Pinchot does an exceptional job of narrating this brilliantly written novel. *****
