Add a CommentThis movie kinda creeps me out and I don't 100% understand it but for whatever reason I like watching it. Idk.
Like Blade Runner, I strongly suspect that Donnie Darko (with its huge fanbase) is, yet, another picture that nobody (supposedly in their right mind) is allowed to dislike._____ Yes. Donnie Darko's story certainly did contain some genuinely compelling moments - And, yes, its story had a lot of potential - But, with all said, its final product left a lot to be desired._____ Donnie Darko's story tells a mighty dark tale about a very screwy, psychotic, rich kid who, in order to vent out his decidedly destructive behavior, conveniently invents an imaginary friend (in the image of a goofy 6 ft. tall rabbit with fukked-up teeth) who encourages him to hit out, big-time, at the ones he hates the most._____ Personally, I think that actor Jake Gyllenhaal was definitely miscast for the part of the Darko boy._____ For all of the interesting ideas that this picture brought to the fore, unfortunately, its story inevitably built to a very unsatisfactory conclusion.
Life, the universe, and everything. Twice. The writer/director's commentary (with Kevin Smith, for some reason) is somewhat illuminating, but it is clear he himself doesn't know why he did things, half the time. Donnie Darko is like life, that way. SPOILER: my take -- DD is about a town that unconsciously inspires a teenager to kill himself. Not a surprise, considering the nature of the town.

Not strictly science fiction, although there is a bit of time travel. I needed to watch this a few times before I really undertood what was going on. Great movie, darkly disturbing full of teenage angst.
