O'Brien's distopia is fascinating and well-realized. She's fearless in tackling some tough issues, including state and individual rights, reproductive rights and disenfranchisement.

Not nearly as good as the first book, this book gets bogged down by a love triangle (square actually) and a plot resolution that is entirely too pat. However, it was just good enough to keep reading, and I will be checking out the next in the series.

I thought this was a solid follow up to the first. I'm not in love with the series, because Gaia kind of annoys me. The plot is interesting though, so I will definitely be reading the 3rd book when it comes out.

Not as good as the first book. I'd almost have rather the brother show up in the village, than the maybe boyfriend who helped her escape (although, admittedly less romantic). Furthermore, the hatred he feels towards her and the relatively quick reconciliation doesn't seem right somehow. It will be interesting to see what happens to their relationship in the third book (likely nothing to deviate from a happy ending for them). I don't like that they're returning to their original city, we'll see how the author tackles it.
